Legion deploys body horror in a theologically precise manner. The possessed humans (e.g., the ice cream truck granny, the contortionist boy) are not demoniacs in the biblical sense; they are angels “riding” human flesh. Their attacks are grotesque—spider-walking, jaw-shattering, limb-reshaping—but the horror lies in the violation of the body’s sanctity. In orthodox Christianity, the body is a temple; in Legion , it becomes a puppet.
However, the Archangel Michael, portrayed by , rebels against this divine command. Michael descends to Earth, cuts off his wings, and seeks out a remote desert diner known as "Paradise Falls". Inside is a motley group of strangers, including a pregnant waitress named Charlie ( Adrianne Palicki ), whose unborn child is destined to be humanity’s savior. Cast and Characters legion 2010
The film, Legion, was released on January 8, 2010. It tells the story of an angel named Michael (played by Paul Bettany) who leads a rebellion against God. The story revolves around a group of angels, led by Michael, who decide to attack humanity because one of their own, Lucifer, was cast out of heaven. Legion deploys body horror in a theologically precise manner
The film also utilizes horror elements, particularly in its depiction of the "possessed"—humans who have been taken over by lesser angels to act as mindless soldiers of the apocalypse. These scenes often draw from the "millennial zombie renaissance," creating a atmosphere of "gooey carnage" and supernatural dread. Reception and Legacy In orthodox Christianity, the body is a temple;
: Palicki plays the central "mother of the savior" figure, a role that served as a significant step in her transition from television (notably Friday Night Lights ) to major film projects.
Upon its release, Legion received largely negative reviews from critics, who cited its uneven tone and B-movie sensibilities. However, it found significant success at the box office, earning over on a $26 million budget .
The climax occurs when Michael, having lost his wings, fights Gabriel (Kevin Durand) in a muddy pit. Gabriel speaks of “duty” and “order”; Michael speaks of “choice.” The film rejects divine command theory: an order from heaven to kill an infant is not moral, no matter the source. This is a Kierkegaardian teleological suspension of the ethical inverted—not faith in the absurd, but rebellion against the absolute.
