Frankenstein

The story of Frankenstein was born during a "ghost story contest" in 1816 among Mary Shelley, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron while they were stuck indoors during a rainy summer in Switzerland. Mary, only 18 at the time, struggled for days until a vivid nightmare inspired her to write about a scientist who brings a "hideous phantasm" to life.

Victor Frankenstein stood amidst a tangle of copper wires and glass vats, his eyes bloodshot from months of sleepless "scientific inquiry" . On the wooden slab lay a figure eight feet tall, a patchwork of carefully selected—though now graying—human remains. "It must work," he whispered, his voice cracking. He wasn't just seeking to heal; he was seeking to usurp the role of the creator. With a frantic pull of a lever, the lightning from the spire above was channeled down into the conductive tank. For a moment, there was only the smell of ozone and scorched air. Then, a dull yellow eye opened. The creature’s limbs twitched with an "uneasy, half-vital motion". But as the spark of life took hold, Victor didn't feel the triumph he had imagined. Instead, he was seized by a "breathless horror and disgust". Looking at the watery eyes and shriveled complexion of his "hideous progeny," he did the one thing a creator never should: he turned his back and fled.
