It is almost always a "soft clog." This is a dense, felted mat of lint, fabric softener residue, hair, and possibly a missing sock that has amassed inside the standpipe or the P-trap (the U-shaped bend in the pipe). Over time, this sludge hardens, narrowing the pipe until water can no longer pass.
