The piece depicts the interior of the lighthouse, looking up the spiral staircase. There are no stairs, however. Instead, millions of paper airplanes fill the vertical shaft, stacked atop one another in a compressed, spiraling column. But the inhabitants of Regret Island are hoarders of the hypothetical. They fold the planes with obsessive precision, creasing every edge of 'what could have been,' but they cannot bear the release.
