It is called the "Red Book" because of its red velvet binding , which was added much later in the 19th century.

The codex was intended for the use of pilgrims visiting the shrine of the (the Virgin of Montserrat). According to an introductory note in the manuscript, the monks compiled these "chaste and pious" songs and dances to give pilgrims a virtuous alternative to the secular, often boisterous music they might otherwise sing while holding night vigils in the church or dancing in the square.
