Gasparilla Krewes

Each Krewe selects a "Court"—a King, Queen, and court of princesses or dukes—often chosen from the families of members or the community. These royalty are presented at the Coronation Ball, a formal gala often requiring white tie or elaborate costumes. It is a high-society affair that contrasts sharply with the rowdiness of the street parade.

The original and most recognizable Krewe. Founded in 1904, YMKG is the protagonist of the festival. Their members portray the pirates of José Gaspar’s mythical crew. They are responsible for the "Invasion"—arriving by ship on horseback and demanding the keys to the city. Membership is by invitation only and is considered a high honor in Tampa society. The identities of the Krewe members were historically kept secret from the public, though in modern times, the leadership (the "Captain" and his staff) are publicly known figures.
