It tells you when it was made, where it was built, and sometimes even which batch it came from. But unlike Fender, Gibson’s serial number system is famously inconsistent. Step 1: Find the Serial Number On most Gibson acoustics, the serial number is stamped on the back of the headstock . You may also find it on the neck block inside the body (visible through the soundhole). For some vintage models (pre-1970s), it may only be on the interior label or stamped into the wood inside. 1952–1961 (The “FON” Era) Gibson used a Factory Order Number (FON) instead of a true serial number. It looks like: V 1234 5 or U 5678 9 .

Note: FONs are not the same as the stamped serial number on the headstock (which was often wrong for acoustics).
1961–1969 (Transitional)

1970–1974 (The Norlin Era Begins)
Format: 6 digits stamped on headstock. First and second digits = last two digits of the year. Example: 701234 = 1970. Exception: In 1974, they introduced a 7-digit number: 1234567 (first digit = last digit of year → 1974).
1975–1976
Format: 6 digits with a space: 00 12345. The first two digits after the space = year. Example: 99 75413 → 1975.
1977–2005 (The Modern “YDDDY” System) This is the most common system for used guitars today.
