Guru Gobind Singh saw in him the spark needed to ignite the flame of justice. He baptized him, renaming him Gurbaksh Singh (though history remembers him fondly as Banda—'the slave'—of the Guru). The Guru bestowed upon him five arrows from his own quiver, a council of five advisors (the Panj Pyare), and a war drum.

Baba Ajit Singh (18) and Baba Jujhar Singh (14) achieved martyrdom while fighting valiantly against overwhelming Mughal forces at the Battle of Chamkaur .
Eventually, through treachery and overwhelming force, the fort fell. Banda Singh was captured along with his infant son, Ajay Singh, and hundreds of his followers.
