Despite the growth and visibility of the lesbian public, challenges persist. Lesbians continue to face marginalization, exclusion, and erasure, both within and outside their own communities. Debates around identity, intersectionality, and inclusivity have sparked controversies and conflicts within lesbian spaces.

For years, the lesbian bar was an endangered species. In the 1980s, there were an estimated 200 lesbian bars in the United States; by 2020, that number had dwindled to fewer than 25. Rising rents, gentrification, and the assimilation of queer culture into mainstream spaces threatened to erase these specific sanctuaries. lesbian public
