In the original folk tale, a king’s son discovers a cellar containing three monsters. He frees the third, (literally "Steelhead"), who immediately kidnaps the hero’s sister/wife. The hero fails to kill Baš Čelik because the monster’s soul is hidden inside an egg, inside a duck, inside a hare, inside a wolf, inside a chest, inside a mountain. The brothers return home, but the two older brothers, jealous of the youngest's success, drug him and leave him in a cave. They take the youngest brother's wife (a princess he won during the tasks) and return to their kingdom. The youngest brother eventually awakens, recalling a clue left by Baš Čelik: that if he is ever in trouble, he should seek out Baš Čelik, for only he can help.
