Shockwave Flash Better Download Chrome
This paper examines the lifecycle of Adobe Shockwave Flash (SWF) within the Google Chrome browser ecosystem. It details the transition from the NPAPI (Netscape Plugin Application Programming Interface) architecture to the PPAPI (Pepper Plugin API) architecture, which allowed Chrome to bundle Flash directly as a built-in component. The paper further analyzes the security implications that led to the "Click-to-Play" restrictions and the eventual End of Life (EOL) deprecation of the platform in December 2020.
