The movie revolves around Ishaan Awasthi, an 8-year-old boy who is struggling in school due to his dyslexia. His parents, Nandkishore and Maya, are frustrated with his poor performance and consider him a failure. However, his art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, recognizes Ishaan's potential and encourages him to express himself through art.

A new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), arrives. He notices Ishaan’s distress and discovers that Ishaan has dyslexia. Nikumbh explains the condition to the school and Ishaan’s parents. He then uses remedial techniques to help Ishaan learn to read and write. Nikumbh organizes an all-school art competition. Ishaan paints a beautiful scene, winning first prize.
