The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, released in 1980, is arguably the most influential drum machine in music history. While original hardware units are rare and expensive, the "808 sound" is ubiquitous in modern production via software emulations. This report analyzes the current landscape of TR-808 VSTs, categorizing them into official Roland releases, third-party analog modeling emulations, and sample-based instruments. The findings suggest that while official emulations offer authenticity, third-party plugins often provide superior workflow features and sound design capabilities.
