Olive oil is a gentle, accessible home remedy for in an otherwise healthy ear with an intact eardrum. It is not a treatment for infections, and it can cause real harm if your eardrum is ruptured.

A 2012 review in American Family Physician noted that while olive oil is safe for cerumen (wax) management, it has against common ear pathogens. In fact, a 2019 study found that olive oil did not reduce ear pain more than no treatment in children with middle ear infections.

The experience of an earache is often marked by sharp, distracting pain and a desperate desire for immediate relief. Before the advent of modern medicine, households relied on traditional remedies to soothe common ailments, and few are as enduring as the use of warm olive oil in the ear. While this practice has persisted for generations, it occupies a complex space between folk wisdom and medical advice. Although olive oil can be an effective home remedy for specific minor conditions, such as earwax impaction, it is not a universal cure and carries specific risks that require careful consideration.
