Considered his masterpiece, Bawa Duka tells the story of an aging estate worker named Dingirala, who spends his life saving for a simple burial fund. The film follows his daily grind, his quiet dignity, and the eventual betrayal by those he trusted. It won several awards at the Sarasaviya and Presidential Film Festivals and was submitted as Sri Lanka’s entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film is often taught in film studies courses as a textbook example of neorealism in Asian cinema.
