The coolest months. While parts of the south and the highlands see snow, most of the country remains relatively mild compared to Northern Hemisphere winters.
In the southern parts of the country—including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and Hobart—the year is divided into four three-month blocks starting on the first day of each month. Weather Overview December – February Hot, sunny, and dry; peak beach weather in the south. Autumn March – May Mild temperatures, changing foliage, and fewer crowds. Winter June – August
A transition period where the intense summer heat begins to fade. Unlike Europe or North America, many Australian native trees are evergreen, so the dramatic "turning of the leaves" is less common.
It's worth noting that the seasons can vary significantly depending on the region in Australia. The northern parts of the country, such as Darwin and the Kimberley, have a tropical climate with a wet and dry season, while the southern parts, such as Melbourne and Tasmania, have a more temperate climate with four distinct seasons.
The truth is, Australia doesn't have four tidy seasons. It has a dozen. The Indigenous Australians knew this—the D’harawal calendar of the Sydney basin speaks of six seasons, from the cool, reliable weather of Wiritjiribin (the echidna breeding time) to the hot, wet storms of Parra’dowee . They read the land by what was flowering, what was spawning, and which way the wind blew.
