This paper explores the evolution, functionality, and narrative significance of the "Codex" (and equivalent information retrieval systems) within the Final Fantasy series. While the term "Codex" is most prominently associated with Final Fantasy XII and the MMO entries Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV , the concept of an in-game encyclopedia has evolved from simple instruction manuals to complex, diegetic databases that shape player understanding of lore, mechanics, and world-building. By analyzing the transition from extrinsic instruction booklets to intrinsic in-game systems, this study demonstrates how the Codex has become a critical tool for narrative immersion and gameplay accessibility.
