Following his passing in 1981, Mirei's architectural legacy continued to inspire generations of architects, designers, and builders. In recognition of his immense influence, the Japan Council of Architecture and Construction established the Yokoyama Mirei Prize in 1994, which recognizes exceptional excellence in Japanese architecture.
