Play the demo on "Phoebe Chillax" (Storyteller) on "Basebuilder" difficulty to learn the mechanics without getting overwhelmed by raids. Once you understand how to survive a winter, you will know if the full game is for you.
The most common "demo" method is purchasing the game on Steam and utilizing their refund policy. Steam typically allows refunds for any reason if the game has been played for less than two hours and was purchased within the last 14 days.
Pause the game immediately (Spacebar). Look at the bottom right. You have three colonists. Click each one and check their tab. You want one good at Building, one good at Plants, and one good at Cooking/Medicine.
