The core of the collection was established through the will of (1855–1952), a prominent Australian chess player and historian. Gibson was a leading figure in Victorian chess and a member of the Library Committee of the State Library of Victoria (then the Public Library of Victoria). Upon his death in 1952, Gibson bequeathed his extensive personal library to the State Library. This included hundreds of rare volumes and manuscripts accumulated over a lifetime.
