Old putty hardens to a cement-like consistency. Attempting to chip it out cold often splits the wooden sash. Apply a heat gun on a low-to-medium setting to the putty. Move the gun constantly to avoid scorching the wood or heating the glass unevenly. Once the putty is pliable, use a stiff putty knife to scrape it away.
