If Breaking Bad Season 3 was about the consequences of entering the drug trade, Season 4 is about the cost of staying there.

The tension in Season 4 is psychological. We watch Walt struggle to find leverage against a man who seems to control every variable. The famous "Box Cutter" scene in the premiere sets the tone: this is not a game; it is a business, and Gus is willing to do whatever is necessary to maintain order.

However, this is built on a lie. Gus uses Jesse’s guilt over Andrea’s brother to drive a wedge between him and Walt. It is heartbreaking to watch Jesse gain confidence, thinking he is a hero, while unknowingly being a pawn in a larger game.

While Walt is fighting for his life, Jesse (Aaron Paul) goes on a tragic journey of his own. Manipulated by Gus and Mike Ehrmantraut, Jesse begins to feel a sense of worth for the first time.
