In a final, desperate bid to defeat Parvati, Shumbha and Nishumbha merged their energies to create a powerful being. However, Parvati was prepared for this contingency. In a final duel, the Goddess fought Shumbha single-handedly. She pierced him with her trident, lifting him into the sky, and threw him down, crushing him. Shumbha died, and the universe was liberated from his tyranny.
