Using close comparative analysis of selected scenes and audience reception data from online forums, this study demonstrates that subtitle choices reconfigure the narrative’s emotional logic, sometimes simplifying or reframing the protagonist’s internal experience.

Drawing on theories of subtitle translation (Gottlieb, 2005) and fandom studies (Jenkins, 2006), the analysis explores how linguistic mediation affects narrative comprehension, emotional engagement, and cultural reception. The film’s nonlinear structure, reliant on short-term memory loss as a plot device, presents unique challenges for subtitle reading speed and retention. Preliminary observations suggest that Indonesian subtitles prioritize action continuity over idiomatic fidelity, altering the experience of the protagonist’s psychological fragmentation. This paper argues that subtitle translation acts not as a neutral conduit but as a reinterpretive frame, reshaping how Indonesian viewers access Bollywood’s narrative and affective codes.
