In mid-2023, a ransomware variant surfaced disguised as PSVUPDAT.PUP for Windows-based Content Manager Assistant users. Victims reported downloading the file from a compromised homebrew forum. Upon execution (the file was an .exe with a renamed extension), the payload encrypted documents and demanded Bitcoin. The real PS Vita update mode never executed because the file lacked valid firmware headers.
