The superior parathyroid gland, derived from the fourth pharyngeal pouch, has a close embryological relationship with the ultimobranchial bodies. Therefore, the superior parathyroid gland is frequently found resting on the surface of the TZ or within a layer of fat immediately adjacent to it.
